As you know, it’s been around 12 years that my revolves around children. I have tried different ways to be around children for their wellbeing, inspiration, and knowledge. Children start their day by drinking lukewarm water and some freshly germinated sprouts.

We slowly gather in the school field and begin walking around in some order. This is a quiet time, we chant some mantras, chant the sound of ‘OM’ or the seven pure notes of the music.

Now, everybody is fully awake. We start running. A few rounds around the ground, and around the school campus, through the garden, around the temple and then back to the ground.

With a few active warm up and stretching exercises, it’s time to do some monkey walk, frog jump, and 25 times sit-ups. Then we do a few asanas and end with Surya Namaskar.

Before we begin studying and chanting Bhagavad-Gita, the students do tap massage followed by breath work. Then we do Kapalbhati, Bhastrika, Nadisodhan, and end with Bhramari Pranayama.

This is followed by chanting mantras and reading Bhagavad Gita.

To end the morning practice, we sit and meditate for a few minutes, and end it by expressing gratitude to the Mother Earth and everybody around us through pranam.

We are bound to act, action brings bondage, and bondage results in sadness. Sadness results in actions that harm ourselves and others around us. This cycle must be broken by exhausting our actions in the pyre of knowledge— that is to say, we must give our actions to the fire of knowledge for it to be purified. Every action must correlate with the deeper understanding of ourselves. Action of detachment peels off the shells, take off the seed cover that hides our potential to turn into a fully grown tree that bears fruits for others.

How do we remain sane, when there is insanity around us. Insanity triggers insanity within us. In one of my poems, I have asked myself, “What does it mean to be a good man?” Success in being a good human being is such a different path to becoming successful in the eyes of the world.

It’s been a while since I said something. There is a lot that we could talk about, especially about what’s happening in Nepal politically. It has changed a lot of my plans for this year.
Anyways, let’s keep it for another day.

Here is a typical day that I spent with our children. This has been quite a usual thing for me for the past many years.
Have fun watching it.

Somewhere in the middle, I am explaining that we have choice over our actions and I explain it using some real life examples.
One of them was about consuming sugar, candy and junk food.
The other one was about stealing, and cheating.
And the other one was about developing good character.
All of it is our choice, but one choice affects the other.
And God is not responsible in deciding sense of doership, action, and the outcome of the action.
This is a lesson from Bhagavad Gita.

Ashtavakra, one of the greatest sages and Advaitins — a profound non-dualist — emphasizes the path of negation: a journey of consciousness from “this body is me, this desire is me, this mind is me, this idea is me, this work is me, this discriminating intellect is me” to the realization that none of these is truly me.
I found this to be a lesson on unlearning and “unconditioning”. Till we remain in our head, or identify ourselves with the mind, we will forever be vulnerable to conditioning. The function of mind is to condition, and our identification with it will condition us.

I deeply feel that it is important for us as educators to develop this understanding and make it a way of life. This is a long journey for each individual, but an essential one that should begin right now in small steps.

Being independent is considered a great virtue — but has anyone truly understood what it means? The modern concept of independence has often taught us to be selfish, self-centered, and obsessed with ourselves.

Independence in the modern world is not really independence at all — it is only independence from other human beings, born out of mistrust. A man no longer trusts another man. We prefer to depend on the material he creates, but not on the one who creates. This illusion of independence leads each individual to try to possess everything possible, forcing humanity to forget its natural interconnectedness.

Independence, in its truest sense, is not about weakening relationships so that we can stand alone. It is a state of inner interconnectedness that continues regardless of what happens in the outer world. True independence is born of inner knowledge and wisdom that grounds us, no matter how rocky the outer differences may be and against our expectations.

If our notion of independence is built at the cost of our inherent interdependence, we are indeed ill-fated. Interdependence is natural — there is no existence of one without the existence of the other. The spirit of independence should always reinforce our interdependence and remind us how deeply we depend on one another.

So we must ask ourselves:
Are we teaching independence(nature aligning independence) — or merely being independent?
Do we even know what it means?
Are we teaching interdependence with the same vigor?

If being independent does not foster compassion, selfless service, and our spiritual growth, then we must question what exactly we are seeking through this idea of independence.

Education is not only about knowing things by your mind, but setting yourself free from within.

So to set yourself free from within is entirely a different story, entirely a different journey.

Of course, external freedom also helps, but setting yourself free internally which means that you learn to become your own master.

That’s the objective of education.

No revolution is complete without us willing to change. Are we ready for that change? The change at an individual level is the next revolution.

What will our next revolution be like? The revolution that you have brought about through your sacrifice was a preliminary condition for the liberation and progress of this nation. But this is not enough!

The next revolution is about self-transformation, about self-education, about self-recognition of the power that lies in us. Do we have any ideals that we are trying to adhere and live by? We have to start transforming ourselves towards it, if we have. If we are unclear, we have to begin the churning. If we don’t have, then we need to find role models, learn from them and put it into action with their support.

Let us make an observation of the aftermath of a peaceful protest, turned into tragedy, and eventually ended with violent upheaval. How has it transformed our conscience? What is our determination? What are we ready to let go off, and embrace? Has it given birth, a genesis of some concreteness at an individual level? We have long suffered from a crippling affliction. A self-inflicted malady caused by our clashing behavior as an individual and behavior in collective. In public, our modus operandi appears to be non-partisan, appears to be patriotic, sane and reasonable. But, behind the curtains we go against our own conscience. Internal revolution within an individual is an effort that one puts on oneself to transform from his selfish desires to collective desires, from only me to us, from my identity to our identity, from me and my party first to nation and its people first. In psychological sense, we call it the purification of an individual ego.

We need to bring about psychological awakening. Human mind is a crazy but powerful instrument. Think about this, how many of Nepalese find it usual to give some bribery in government offices to get their work done promptly? We live in a psychological ignorance. Nepalese have been psychologically cultured to give and accept bribery, misuse public resources, and defy civic awareness. In politics, a time comes when the attachment to a political party or a leader overpowers our genuine interest in serving the country. We get chained by our own associations. The main purpose of being associated to an organization, a party, or to a leader to realize a greater freedom for an individual and the society. Our weak psychological awareness chains us. When an individual stops working within himself, a rift appears. A rift between his inner voice and outer desire for wealth, power and domination. We dissociate ourselves from the reality.

Be it a follower or a leader, the outer success must be purified through inner psychological purging. Any stains of the past and its causes must be worked on so that it doesn’t repeat. Psychological awareness is when an individual is capable of recognizing otherwise insignificant hinderances acting against his own conscience. The youth of this generation must work on both fronts. Cleansing the evils of the society who are threatening the spontaneous surge towards a just, equal, and peaceful society is a must. But, remember! We must also depollute our psyche every moment, every day, and throughout our life. If we ignore the second part, we will be infected by the same egotistic, selfish, devilish virus.

Therefore, as Upanishads says,” Uttistha, Jagrata, Prapya vannibodhata ” which means Arise, awake, and stop not till the goal is reached.

On 4 September 2025, the Government of Nepal, under the leadership of K.P Oli, from Communist Party of Nepal and allies ordered the shutdown of social media platforms.

On 8 September 2025, a gathering of GenZ’s was organized by multiple groups, of which one of them was Hami Nepal. The protest was organized spontaneously without any clear leadership or agenda. The only agendas were, resistance against corruption, against the oppressive government. This protest saw a gathering that no one had expected. The butterfly effect turned into a huge gathering that marched towards the parliament.

The Prime Minister ordered the police to take action against those who break the barricade, which resulted into the murder of 20+ young students, and some of them in school uniform. A peaceful march ended with a great tragedy.

When our students heard about the development, my students also wanted to go and demonstrate against the terror of the government. We went around 10 am in the morning in a small van, but had to leave the van quite far away from the city center because the students and young people were already on the road.

We were surprised to see, all of sudden that the protest had turned into a violent revolution already. The merciless death of young students had already angered us. So our march began!

As we made our way into the city, the protest had turned uncontrollable. The frustration and oppression that people had felt for many decades, and freshly fueled by the murder of students didn’t stop them from putting into ablaze anything that was related to current government. Their homes, their party offices, and businesses which had connections with the leaders.

The primeninister didn’t resign even after such demand. A little after noon, people marched to Singhadurbar, an old palace that houses many ministries was set on fire. Devastating! It felt like our history was turning into ashes. May be for many it didn’t mean anything but a place that housed power but never for the common people. Which is true too.

I understood that when revolution begins, there is nothing that stops it. It spirals into many unpredictable outcomes. It doesn’t go by rules, or by sentiments of a few, or by the explanation of a few about what should be done or not.

We tried our best in some places to stop groups from vandalizing and setting ablaze of private property, but the rage was unstoppable.

Nepal’s future is at a crossroads. The opportunity this revolution has created is monumental. But, if it doesn’t translate into a momentum of change in the individual awareness, political stability, and collective effort. This may lead into a quagmire of international interference, instability, collapse of our collective identity, and continuous spiral towards conflict and tragedy.

The issues of corruption and choosing right leadership by young generation is a matter of education. Why has Nepal failed to choose the right leader for the past many decades? What is wrong with the current education and economic state of people ? Why despite education, many young people get into the tendencies of book licking and become what we call as “Jholey”. Jholey indicates to someone who has blind faith towards the leader and carries the agenda of the his/her corrupt leader rather than the actual needs of the nation and its people. Let this revolution wipe off the “Jholey culture.”

The students in the school are almost done with their assessment period and have two weeks to be in regular classes. After two weeks, the kids will have holidays. This vacation is also called as Dashain and Tihar vacation. These are two major festivals of Nepal.

Dear Friends,

I have been invited to be part of conferences and workshops in a few places around the world. After my visit to the US and a few days in Europe, I came to the Caucasus in Georgia to meet some youths and spend a little more than a week conducting workshops and talks with them on Philosophy, Spirituality, and Education.

It was a group of students, mostly with Russian roots and diaspora spread across different parts of Europe. My objective and responsibility were to introduce intercultural dialogue, concepts of Eastern philosophy, and my own journey of education with its underlying foundations.

Most of the students were in their final year of school, and many of them were highly motivated and intellectually curious. As I always feel, it is deeply interesting to work with young but mature youths, no matter where they are from.

The topics we covered during the 9 days were quite difficult, but I think they were not inappropriate. I had slight hesitation, but it turned out to be the right decision.

What is real? What is the concept of Maya (illusion)? An inquiry into whether mind, body, and self are different, and what their relation is? How should we approach life, which constantly faces conflicts, dichotomies, and difficulties? What is the right way of understanding detachment and surrender—often misused to justify terrible religious wrongdoings in the world?

I introduced Dhyan and mindfulness, and how they can empower us. The teachings stood in contrast to our misconceptions that these practices mean handing over human responsibilities to “God” in heaven.

More than a lecture, it was an amazing inquiry-based learning process, with a lot of silence in between to reflect, and to see how intercultural knowledge can be examined to make a positive impact on our lives, as one of my students remarked.

What people once looked for in their 40s and 50s, a significant part of the new generation is seeking in their 20s. The young generation is taking more and more risks, even regarding their inner growth. This risk is both good and bad. It comes at a cost: there are fewer role models in their immediate environment to see it as a grace or an opportunity, which can lead them to see the world as despaired and sunken.

Developing a spiritual backbone in youths without imposing or binding them to limitations is intricate and often not easy. It requires us, as teachers, to express it through life rather than through ideas. The youth often feel apprehensive about paying the price of their freedom. True freedom, however, cannot be passed on merely through ideas—it must unfold through a creative process that is instantaneous, taking the form and shape of the participants themselves.

How do we create an environment where people are willing to let go of their small freedom for a greater freedom that is, at first, inconceivable? This is where most of our insecurities are born. The willingness to think, to experiment, to risk, to place faith before any fruition—this is the necessary attitude that educational values must instill.

At the end of the workshop, I was filled with awe receiving messages and hugs filled with love and respect. Even though few of us left at midnight, more than 40 students had gathered around the van to bid farewell with teary eyes.

I’m writing to share some news. From June 22nd, I’ll be traveling for a few weeks to the United States, and some countries in Europe. The purpose of this journey is to share and connect with educators, schools, organizations, and friends who are interested in learning about our work in Nepal—and most importantly, to explore ways we can collaborate. I will also be sharing about my journey as an educator that started as early as when I was 13 or 14. In addition, I will also be presenting our philosophy of education that weaves science, spirituality, skills and human values. My major interest these days has been in trying to put in practice educational philosophies that help in creating an environment for students to help them grow to become resilient, compassionate, skillful and happy.

I’ll begin this journey by attending the AERO Conference in Manchester, USA, and have a few planned visits and meetings along the way. You are needed. This is a time for united action. Please take a moment to read the following and visit the links to the events.

The global campaign to democratize education was given impetus with Peter Gray’s keynote address and workshop at AERO 2023. Since then the IDEC 2023 Resolution was adopted at the IDEC 2023. It establishes the foundation for the global campaign by calling on the United Nations to clarify that compulsory education in no way means forcing young people to learn in ways that do not serve their best interests.

The Clarify Compulsory Education campaign is underway to grow the conversation in the mainstream about the right to a rights-respecting education. It is encouraging people to make Democratic Education a topic of conversation at dinner tables everywhere. To this end it has created matching events, see links below, to accommodate people in eastern and western time zones. These events are created to introduce Suvemäe – Pioneer of Possibility to the mainstream. The documentary is a fabulous resource illuminating how people can take a substantial step towards democratizing traditional state-funded schools, and it will bring attention and support to those outside of these systems, particularly in areas where public education is stagnant and oppressive.

Kindly do what you can to encourage parent-teacher and religious groups, community associations, and others concerned about young people and their future to attend the December 10^th event and to grow the conversation in their communities. A. Definition of Self-Directed Education (SDE): Education is the sum of everything a person learns that enables the person to live a satisfying and meaningful life.

Self-directed education is education that derives from the self-chosen activities and life experiences of the person being educated…. Contrast to imposed education.

Self-Directed Education (SDE) is distinguished from self-directed education (lower case).

Legal routes to SDE: Democratic schools, homeschooling (unschooling), SDE learning centers.

B. The Educative Instincts, Which Underlie Self-Directed Education

1. Curiosity—the drive to know and understand.

2. Playfulness—the drive to practice and create. Children everywhere, when the have the freedom to do so, play at all of the basic human skills. Play is how they build their bodies, learn to manage risk, acquire language, learn to follow rules, exercise their imagination, practice logic, and learn to use the tools of their culture.

3. Sociability—the drive to know what others know and share what you know.

4. Willfulness—the drive to be in charge of one’s own life.

5. Planfulness—the drive to plan for the future. This is manifested first in play.

6. The drive to grow up, to become an adult.

C. Self-Directed Education in Hunter-Gatherer Bands

Main conclusions: (1) adults do not direct children’s activities. (2) Children, including teens, have unlimited time to play and explore. (3) In their exploration and play, children acquire the knowledge and practice the skills that are essential for success in their culture.

D. Evidence that Self-Directed Education Works in Modern Societies

Follow-up studies of graduates of the Sudbury Valley School and of grown unschoolers, revealed that they are succeeding well in adult life. They have done well in higher education and careers. Keys to their success include a strong sense of personal responsibility, continued self-direction, ability to learn on the job, and, often, careers that are direct extensions of passionate interests they developed as children.

Reasons why SDE is easier today than in decades past.

E. The Optimal Context for Self-Directed Education

1. The social expectation (and reality) that education is children’s responsibility.

2. Unlimited freedom to play, explore, and pursue own interests.

3. Opportunity to play with the tools of the culture.

4. Access to a variety of caring adults, who are helpers, not judges.

5. Free age mixing among children and adolescents.

6. Immersion in a stable, moral, democratic community.

None of these conditions are present in our standard schools.

I cannot express enough how deeply touched I am to have known you and to facilitate your participation at IDEC 2023, Nepal, and Himalayan IDEC 2023. Many friends often told me that I would need a long rest after the conference, but the bond and love that we shared were recharging me all the time.

Your arrival at IDEC was in itself a great joy for me. It was a joy to welcome you, a joy to host you, and a joy to see you enjoy the conference. Our students and adults from the community truly wanted you to stay with us forever.

It might take some time before it is available (especially with sorting and editing hundreds of GB), but meanwhile, we are excited to let you know that we are creating a pool of resources that is readily available for everybody.

We are on the 3rd day of the IDEC 2023 and it has been a great journey. ~ 500 participants from ~ 30 countries are participating with great enthusiasm. We still have two more days for IDEC 2023, before we begin Himalayan IDEC 2023.
